THE ULTIMATE GUIDE IN AGISTRI: THE TOP 16 THINGS TO DO AND SEE
My expectations about the island were minimal prior to leaving for Agistri. I thought I was going to find a small calm island with just a few beaches and taverns. Nothing more nothing less, however, I was wrong. I decided to write a guide after seeing so many things to do in such a small island.
Agistri is only 55 minutes away from Athens if you take a speed ferry. The best choice would be taking the Flying Dolphin to that small emerald at the Saronic Gulf which is surrounded by turquoise waters and pine woods. It is the perfect destination for your quick getaway during weekends. Agistri is ideal for couples to enjoy a romantic trip with dinner and drinks under the moon, but also suitable for families with children.
Below you will find my ultimate list of the top 16 activities and entertainments on the island of Agistri:
Swimming. This is the main reason why I visited the island. There are so many famous beaches around Agistri, such as Skala, Megalochori, Skliri, Chalkiada, Dragonera, Mareza, Aponissos and the list can be continued. Sandy, pebble or rocky beaches with pure and crystal – clear emerald waters, sometimes with waves and sometimes as a mirror.
Kayak tours. Go kayak Greece provides sea kayaking tours around the island of Agistri. You can take day tours, half day tours or magic sunset tours.
Scuba Diving. Agistri Scuba Diving school for beginners and advanced. Unforgettable diving experience with the rich and colorful underwater world of the island.
Snorkeling. The rocky beaches, which you can find many around the island are ideal for snorkeling. A lot of fun for children and adults alike.
Fishing. You can find a large boat from Megaloxori, which transfers you to the best places for fishing with nets and not only.
Rent a speed boat. You can rent a small speed boat to explore the remaining secrets bays of the island, without any license and with affordable prices.
Water taxi. A water taxi is a bit more expensive way to travel around the islands, but you can stop at any bay and even get to the neighboring island Aegina.
Hiking. The best activity for someone who loves to examine the island on foot. Amazing routes lie among the pine forests and sea bays.
Rent a bike or scooter. Mountain, city or Cocomat bikes, and scooter are the easiest way to explore the natural beauty of the island and really affordable.
Trips to the island Aegina. There are daily trips with a boat “Agistri Express” to the Monastery of Saint Nektarios and the Temple of Aphaia at Aegina.
The festival at the Ancient Theater of Epidavros. Do not miss this experience, it’s only happening during the months of July and August, twice a week. You can visit this unforgettable performance from Agistri, which is taking place at the ancient theater and can be reached by boat to the Peloponnese.
Sightseeing. You can admire the old murals of the Church Zoodochos Pigi, Agios Nicolas at Limenaria and the Church of Saint Anargiron with a light blue dome.
Horse riding. Riding lessons and horse riding in Aponisos for adults and children, found next to the natural lake.
Eating out. Here is a list of few places that deserve your attention:
Skala area: “To Agistri” is a very beautiful tavern-ouzeri with fresh local fish and seafood. The restaurant “Alter Ego” is perfect for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Here you can try the famous Greek Lobster spaghetti. The grill house “Nea Lagoudera” for meat lovers. The Italian restaurant “Avli” with a rich menu and traditional Italian pizza. The grill house “Gyrokomeio” for tasty and economic Greek fast food. The tavern “Toxotis” where you can taste a homemade Greek traditional food.
Megaloxori area: The tavern “Mandraki” offers homemade cooked food. The café “Kouros” for delicious breakfast, sweets, and drinks during the day. The restaurant “Castro” with an unusual architecture in the form of a fortress and a breathtaking view of the sea.
Nightlife. Yes, this small island also has an entertaining night for all ages. If you prefer clubs, the Taboo in Agistri and the Castro in Megalochori with Dj’s and unique cocktails is a good choice. For a more romantic pastime, you can head over to the beach area, there are bars with music and tables right on the beach.
Shopping. Do not expect great shopping here, but handmade jewelry deserves your attention. Also, you can find little shops with different souvenirs and various sweets with pistachios. On the islands, there are several supermarkets if you needed and ice-cream shops.
Agistri certainly cannot be called “a boring island”. It’s far from it. Such a small lush island, with so many things to do, and if you’re on a budget, then this is the perfect solution for a quick getaway from Athens.
